A Eutopia Hackathon in Sustainable Transportation

In this learning community students work together in teams to solve a problem on the theme of sustainable transportation. Through the combination of preparatory lectures and a cross-campus Hackathon accompanied by coaches and a final pitch, the students work to develop a business concept that contributes to a more sustainable future for mobility and associated logistics. The final pitch event which takes place in front of a live jury where the students have to convince a jury composed of teachers and external stakeholders (e.g. public transportation companies, traffic authorities, logistics providers, etc).

• Hackathon on Sustainable Mobility (November 2021). 

The hackathon has the objective to create new business concept for a more sustainable mobility and logistics. With heterogenous teams, students will identify a transport challenge and solve it with a new business model. The 5 structured sessions of the hackathon will help them to present at the end of the adventure a pitch in front of a jury made of professionals from the sector. They will need to convince them about the sustainability, the feasibility and the originality of the solution they propose. To furthersupport the students, dedicated coaches are available (resulting from relevant field experts suggested across the LC partners).

Workload: 5 sessions of 2 hours. The workload should be included in this hours as these are working sessions. A few hours extra are needed if students are unable to complete planned work during the dedicated sessions.

Associate Senior Lecturer of Logistics and Transport Economics at the School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg. My main research areas are maritime transport, port economics, sustainable shipping, regulation of transport infrastructures and port conflicts. I have published my works in several academic journals and book chapters. I have been conducted research stays at the Universities of British Columbia (Vancouver), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) and UN-ECLAC (Chile). Prof. dr. Philippe Lebeau is teaching and research assistant at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel where he lectures Supply Chain Management. He is also member of the research group MOBI (Mobility, Logistics and Automotive Technology). He defended successfully his PhD in 2016 thanks to a Prospective Research for Brussels and the supervision of Prof. Dr. Cathy Macharis and Prof. Dr. Joeri Van Mierlo. He investigated the potential of introducing battery electric vehicles in city logistics. His research expertise are among others in sustainable logistics, electric vehicles, urban freight transport in Brussels, Total Cost of Ownership, Conjoint Based Choice and Multi-Criteria Multi-Actor analysis.

Juliana is a PhD Researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She has a Master's in Urban Studies from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université Libre de Bruxelles and a bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from EAFIT University. At Mobilise VUB research group, she works researching the potential of cargo bikes for sustainable mobility and logistics in Brussels under Prof. dr. Philippe Lebeau and Prof. dr. Cathy Macharis's supervision. Her main research areas of work and interest are urban cycling mobility, sustainable urban logistics, behavioral change, mobility management, and gender mainstreaming in mobility.

Patricija BAJEC is an Assistant Professor and Head of the Transport Logistics department at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Maritime Studies. She holds a degree and a PhD in transportation and logistics science. Her research interest includes last-mile delivery, logistics/supply chain sustainability, multi-criteria decision making and other optimisation methods in transport and logistics problems (proper location of hubs, e-BSS charging stations) and the optimisation of logistics distribution centre activities. She has been involved in different research projects in Transport, Logistics and Innovative education methods.

Marta Guerriero is Associate Professor and International Partnerships Coordinator in the Global Sustainable Development Department at the University of Warwick. She is also Thematic Lead (Economic Sustainability) of Warwick’s ‘Sustainable Cities’ Global Research Priority. She is an applied economist with interests in development and environmental economics. She approaches her research and teaching in an interdisciplinary manner, also incorporating aspects of social and environmental policy, political economy and development studies. During her academic career, she has taught several modules focusing on sustainable development issues and collaborated with a range of UK and international stakeholders in the field.
