Join the UPF 'Catalan for Beginners' Free Course

Do you want to learn Catalan, discover Barcelona, and know more about Catalan cuisine, music, and traditions, all from the comfort of your home? Now it's possible with the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) 'Catalan for Beginners' organized by UPF, open to all EUTOPIA members as well.

Catalan for Beginners is an online Catalan course that aims to provide basic lexical and grammatical resources so that you can communicate in a variety of day-to-day situations. It is free, open to everyone, and meant for any international students who will join a Catalan university or anyone who is interested in the Catalan language and culture. This MOOC is taught by professors at Universitat Pompeu Fabra who will accompany you at all times and provide anything you might need.

Over three weeks, you will gain a basic grounding in the Catalan language, but you will also acquire other knowledge with the course "Un dia amb Ella" ("A day with Ella"). The course, by means of a fictional series and its characters, will allow you to immerse yourself in the heart of Barcelona. You’ll also learn a bit about Catalan cuisine, music, and traditions. Because learning a language is much more than just understanding words; learning a language is opening a door to the world. As such, this is a course designed to teach Catalan while having fun. You can register until December 25.

The multidisciplinary MOOC team at UPF involves staff from different fields, ranging from audiovisual and computer technicians to educational support. Together with the MOOC teaching staff, they aim to optimise the university’s resources to support the design, creation, and publishing of MOOCs with the UPF guarantee of quality and innovation.

The first edition of our Catalan course for the academic year 2023-2024 kicks off on November 20, 2023. You can delve into 15 hours spread over 3 weeks plus an extra 2 weeks to enhance your learning experience, and no prior knowledge of Catalan is necessary; everyone is welcome! Looking ahead to future editions, you can also join the second term from February 19 to March 22, 2024, and the third term from June 17 to July 19, 2024.
