Summer Academy for Global Privacy Law 2023: June 19th - 23rd

The 8th edition of the Brussels Privacy Hub Summer Academy for Global Privacy Law will be titled “From Data Access to Data Transformations: How to Govern Data in the Age of Analytics and AI”. It will focus on Personal Data & Algorithmic ProcessingThird Party Data AccessComparative PerspectivesData Access from Third Countries & Data Transfers and Data Transformations & PETs.

Organised by Professor Sophie Stalla-Bourdillon, Scientific Coordinator and Barbara da Rosa Lazarotto, Managing Coordinator, with support from Brussels Privacy Hub Co-Directors Professor Gianclaudio Malgieri and Professor Christopher Kuner, the Summer Academy will feature a plethora of high-profile speakers.

The 2023 Summer Academy for Global Privacy Law will take place in a hybrid format, both online and on-site, from Monday 19 June to Friday 23 June  2023.

VUB Engineering Summer School 2023: July 3rd - 7th

During the VUB Faculty of Engineering Summer School 2023, in cooperation with ArcelorMittal, industry guest speakers and VUB professors will cover all fields of engineering linked to the main production processes of ArcelorMittal. Students will also be invited for a visit.

The summer school will give every subject addressed ample time and consideration.
On the first day, there will be a welcome session outlining practicalities for the week, with an outline on the education and research activities at the VUB, and an overview of the learning objectives and activities of the summer school itself. There will also be an introductory class to ArcelorMittal.

The rest of the first week will consist of lectures, from VUB professors and industry speakers. Various topics will be addressed, such as steel production, Al, robotics and machine learning. On Thursday, we invite you to a private tour and visit to ArcelorMittal's facilities, where you will see all processes you have learned about during the summer school applied to real examples and applications. Besides the learning activities, there will be ample of time for social activities to enjoy the VUB campus in summer and the nearby centre of Brussels, including a tour of Brussels, a visit to Ghent and a closing reception.

Summer School on EU Policy Making: July 3rd - 14th

This Jean Monnet Summer School, taught on campus, allows students to explore both the old and the new centre of diplomacy in Europe. It is held one week in Brussels and one week in Vienna and provides a 'crash course' in European Union Policy Making. The focus area will be civil rights, touching on policy discussions related to human security, migration, anti-discrimination, diversity.

The intensive two-week course is held from Monday 3 - Friday 14 July 2023 and is organised by the Brussels School of Governance (VUB), the Diplomatische Akademie Wien — Vienna School of International Studies and the University of Vienna. 
 

2023 Summer School theme: Analysing civil rights in today's EU


The intensive two-week Jean Monnet Summer School on EU Policy Making, taught on campus, is held one week in Brussels and one week in Vienna from Monday 3 to Friday 14 July 2023. This Summer School allows students to explore both the old and the new centre of diplomacy in Europe. The Brussels School of Governance joins forces with the Diplomatische Akademie Wien — Vienna School of International Studies and the University of Vienna to bring you this 'crash course' in European Union Policy Making. The focus area of the Summer School, which will be civil rights, touching on policy discussions related to human security, migration, anti-discrimination, diversity.

Packed with interactive seminars and study visits, this summer programme attracts students and young professionals who wish to broaden their knowledge of the European institutions, European law and the European decision-making process in general. The first week of the summer school takes place in Brussels and reviews the main EU institutions and decision-making procedures. During the second week students learn more about EU foreign relations, while enjoying the beautiful city of Vienna.

The Summer School corresponds to 5 ECTS. It is also part of the Postgraduate Certificate in EU Policy Making. This certificate is equivalent to 25 ECTS credits and provides an even better insight in the different EU policy areas.

The Brussels School of Governance is an alliance between the Institute for European Studies (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and Vesalius College. This Summer School is a programme that is organised by the Institute for European Studies (VUB), a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.

Biotech Summer School: August 14th - 25th

The summer school takes place at the VUB in Brussels on the main campus, and is open to BA students with a background in biology, chemistry, biotechnology or biomedical sciences. Participants will be immersed in state-of-the-art biotechnology-related research and developments, via classes and internships.

On the first day, there will be a welcome session outlining practicalities for the week, with an outline on the education and research activities at the VUB, and an overview of the learning objectives and activities of the summer school itself. The rest of the first week will consist of lectures, from VUB professors and international guest speakers, and hands-on workshops. Various topics will be addressed, such as microbiology, protein biochemistry, immunology and plants.During the second week, you will be able to take a look behind the scenes of a well-equipped state-of-the-art research laboratory and to experience ongoing research activities. You will follow a researcher closely during his/her research project, which is linked to one of the themes of the Biotech Summer School.

Besides the learning activities, there will be ample of time for social activities to enjoy the VUB campus in summer and the nearby centre of Brussels: including two informal group dinners, a guided tour of Brussels, a “chocolate” experience and a visit to an artisanal brewery in Brussels.

Summer School on Distributed and Replicated Environments (DARE 2023): September 11th - 15th

DARE2023 is an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme funded by the European Union. It consists of a one-week course held from Monday 11 to Friday 15 September 2023 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels, Belgium. These in-person sessions are combined with online introductory and closing sessions. The summer school aims to prepare master students and PhD students for advanced study in the field of distributed systems. In this edition, we focus on techniques for supporting highly availability.
