The 10th EUTOPIA Week, hosted by CY Cergy Paris University (CY) across its various campuses in Cergy and the Île-de-France region, highlighted how European universities can collaborate to tackle pressing transnational issues. With a comprehensive agenda intertwining research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, the event explored themes including research policy, international cooperation, and the transformative power of academic initiatives. Guided by the motto “Entrepreneurship for Impact,” CY’s EUTOPIA Week emphasised the role of universities in driving societal advancement through research-driven innovation.

Driving Innovation Through Strategic Research

A defining feature of EUTOPIA Week 2024 was its focus on research, prominently featured in a dedicated meeting of Vice-Rectors for Research and Research Offices. These sessions centred on strategic plans to enhance the alliance’s collective impact by improving monitoring and evaluation systems for organically grown and strategically supported research projects. Key initiatives included:

  • Coordination through EUTOPIA’s future Global Institute: Strengthening networks to support early-career researchers, innovation, and project management across partner universities.
  • PhD Co-Tutelle and Research Mobility: Advancing researcher mobility and cross-institutional doctoral supervision to foster collaborative, cross-border knowledge sharing.
  • Strategic Research Tracking: Implementing improved mechanisms for assessing research outcomes to maximise the alliance’s influence in tackling scientific challenges.

Discussions also underscored efforts to enhance research infrastructure, focusing on initiatives such as the aUPaEU-Agora project and partnerships with European frameworks like ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures). These efforts aim to provide researchers access to cutting-edge facilities, promoting collaboration and innovation across borders.

Entrepreneurship for Impact: CY’s Vision

CY Cergy Paris University demonstrated its commitment to integrating entrepreneurship into its academic framework, spotlighting initiatives that bridge research and entrepreneurial practice. The discussions emphasised the vital role of start-up incubators in fostering entrepreneurship, particularly in economically diverse regions. While dynamic ecosystems provide fertile ground for innovation, universities in less vibrant areas are crucial in nurturing aspiring entrepreneurs. Incubators connect students with local economic stakeholders, empowering ventures in underserved regions.

Experts highlighted the importance of promoting entrepreneurship as a complementary skill set through interdisciplinary courses, encouraging students to view entrepreneurial skills as valuable assets in any career pathway. Even brief entrepreneurial experiences can cultivate competencies such as innovation, resilience, and strategic thinking, which are central to EUTOPIA’s academic strategy. EUTOPIA’s collaborative initiatives, including the Open Innovation Challenge and plans for a mentorship network, aim to cultivate globally-minded entrepreneurs. These programmes enable students to address challenges requiring cross-border solutions, exemplifying the alliance’s commitment to impactful research and innovation.

EUTOPIA Week 2024 showcased how the synergy between research, innovation, and entrepreneurship can position universities as catalysts for societal transformation. By aligning resources, nurturing talent, and leveraging cutting-edge infrastructures, the EUTOPIA alliance sets new standards for higher education in Europe. CY Cergy Paris University’s vision of “Entrepreneurship for Impact” served as a compelling reminder of how academia can empower the next generation of changemakers, fostering resilience and innovation to create a more inclusive future.
