About to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its creation, Warwick appoints a new Chancellor.

 

The University of Warwick has appointed Bience Gawanas, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, as its new Chancellor. She will take on her new role from January 2025. Bience will serve as the ceremonial head of the University, presiding over significant events and acting as an ambassador for Warwick’s principles of academic excellence, diversity, and social impact. The University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Stuart Croft, expressed excitement about Bience’s appointment, highlighting her international experience and commitment to education and global development. Bience, who was forced into exile during the South African apartheid era and came to Warwick as a refugee, expressed her honour at being appointed Chancellor and her enthusiasm for continuing Warwick’s academic excellence and inclusivity tradition. She will succeed the outgoing Chancellor, Baroness Catherine Ashton. Warwick, known for its rigorous academic programs and innovative research, will celebrate its 60th anniversary next year.
