Project Management: From Local to Global Challenges

The goal of this community is to develop projects to respond to the common challenges faced by European cities from a global perspective. The activities are framed in considering the goals of the EUTOPIA alliance that conceives universities as place-making agents for their cities and surrounding territories, and that promote inter-university, multidisciplinary and multilingual work as an open federation of institutions of higher education. Students work on global challenges and develop innovative responses to these challenges.

This course presents the basic concepts of project management that at any one time are put into practice through some tools of simulation.

Miquel Oliver is a full professor at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. He received his PhD from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 1999, a Degree in Business Administration (UOC, 2009) and GloColl Executive Education (Harvard Univ., 2011-12). Before joining UPF, he was Associate Professor at the UPC and Visiting Scholar at Rutgers University (the US, 1999). He is leading the multidisciplinary Networking and Strategies Research Group (NeTS) since its foundation. He has been Visiting Scientist at MIT (2013-14) as well as at Columbia University (2011), Queens Univ. of Belfast (2015), Southampton University (2018) and Cardiff University (2019). His research is on wireless communications, with a multidisciplinary view including regulation, telecom policies, blockchain and economic impact.  Prof. Oliver has authored over 120 technical papers (Google-scholar), over 40 counted in ISI WoK Journals, 37,9% in Top 10% Journals Percentiles according to SCOPUS, as well as edited three books, holds three patents, supervised thirteen PhD thesis and confounded and advised one spinoff company. Four of his papers have received the best paper award in international conferences.

Free De Backer is an assistant professor at the Department of Educational Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She is a member of the research group Brussels Research Centre for Innovation, Learning and Diversity [BILD]. She has a background in adult educational sciences and has built extensive expertise in arts and cultural education and participation in various learning environments and at different ages. Topics she has focused on are arts mediation, socially engaged arts, cultural participation, cultural policy and interdisciplinary collaboration. A central focus of her research is exploring the role of the ‘mediator’ in the relationship between the arts and the beholder. She is currently supervising several PhDs within this field. She is involved as a coordinator or partner in E.U. projects such as Erasmus+ KA2 and KA3. She is teaching several courses on arts and cultural education in the bachelor's and master's programs.

Koen Lombaerts is a full professor and vice-dean at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He deals with the development and implementation of innovative learning environments within formal and informal educational settings. He is chair of the Research Group Brussels Innovation for Learning and Diversity (BILD) at VUB. A central focus in his research is clarifying learner needs when designing learning environments, considering the impact of self-regulatory skills of both students and teachers. He is currently a promotor of several PhD within this domain and published several peer-reviewed articles in high standard international scientific journals on these topics. He has coordinated several EU projects, collaborations, and WPs, and proven his management and leadership in and outside Europe, e.g. t-MAIL (Teacher Mobile Application for Innovative Learning), SLIDEshow (Showcasing Self-regulated Learning Implemented through Data-driven Education).

Nikolay A. Dentchev is an associate professor of CSR and Entrepreneurship at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. He holds the Solvay Business School Chair of Social Entrepreneurship at VUB, with founding partners Close the Gap, BNP Paribas Fortis, and Euroclear. Nikolay is involved in initiatives supporting student entrepreneurship for more than ten years and couching about ten students a year to develop their business. He has (co)authored more than 40 scientific publications, published in various indexed journals such as Business & Society, Journal of Business Ethics, Business Ethics: A European Review. Nikolay serves occasionally as guest editor to special issues in journals such as Business & Society and Journal of Cleaner Production. He also serves at the executive board of two international associations, i.e. IABS and NBM.
