FELLOWSHIPS

FELLOWSHIPS AS A STRATEGIC PILLAR

EUTOPIA recognises that Europe’s research future depends on cultivated ecosystems where talent, ideas, and institutional resources flow deliberately across borders. Fellowships are therefore central to our strategy—as coordinated interventions designed to strengthen the human infrastructure of collaborative research and innovation.

Through two complementary programmes, EUTOPIA invests systematically in researchers at critical career junctures, providing both training and community while embedding them within an intentionally interconnected network of universities, partners, and innovation actors.

The EUTOPIA Science and Innovation Fellowships (EUTOPIA-SIF)

SIF targets postdoctoral researchers—the generation immediately after the PhD who will shape Europe’s research agenda for decades to come. Operating as an MSCA COFUND action with €10.2M in joint funding from the European Commission and partner universities, EUTOPIA-SIF will support 76 fellows over five years. These researchers are deliberately selected not only for scientific excellence but for their potential to bridge academia and innovation, advancing frontier research while building the practical awareness and networks necessary to translate discoveries into technological and economic impact. Fellows are embedded within a carefully designed ecosystem of supervision, training, and cross-university collaboration that prepares them to lead research teams and shape Europe’s innovation landscape.

The Young Leaders Academy (YLA)

The YLA complements this by supporting early to mid-career researchers—those 2 to 12 years beyond the PhD—who are consolidating their independence and establishing their research identities. Through cohort-based programmes and dedicated training, YLA Fellows develop research leadership capabilities while initiating collaborations across the alliance. Critically, they also serve as intellectual bridges, designing challenge-based, research-led curricula that connect graduate education to cutting-edge inquiry, and acting as ambassadors who give lived expression to EUTOPIA’s vision of an integrated European research community.

Together, SIF and YLA create a pipeline of talent development and network integration, ensuring that the Alliance’s commitment to interconnected excellence translates into sustained research leadership and institutional impact.
