RESEARCH & INNOVATION strategy

Driving European Excellence

Europe’s Research and Innovation (R&I) landscape is evolving rapidly, and our R&I Strategy intends to be a tool to navigate through this transformation.

As part of the European Universities Initiative, EUTOPIA connects ten research-focused universities to build a collaborative knowledge ecosystem throughout Europe, leveraging the unique strengths of each institution while preserving their independence, fostering cross-border innovation and collaboration, promoting sustainability-focused research, and enhancing Europe’s global competitiveness.

Aim and objectives

The primary aim of our R&I Strategy is to enhance capacity building for excellence and impact through research and innovation collaboration. This is achieved through three distinct objectives.

1. Develop and strengthen R&I collaboration to promote knowledge sharing, excellence & societal impact

The first objective is to develop and strengthen the EUTOPIA R&I collaboration to promote knowledge sharing, excellence, and societal impact. This objective aligns with the principle of comprehensive research collaboration, which emphasises the engagement of diverse stakeholders. By promoting R&I collaboration, EUTOPIA seeks to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, resources, and ideas among students, faculty, and academic and non-academic partners. This objective contributes to the establishment of an open and inclusive academic space that connects communities across various disciplines, ecosystems, and geographical borders. To meet these objectives, EUTOPIA will:

  • Facilitate networking and co-creation of projects through our Research Lighthouses;
  • Design specific programmes for early career researchers;
  • Facilitate the sharing of research infrastructures;
  • Facilitate network and benchmarking within our Grants & Innovation Offices.

2. Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement to drive societal impact

This objective aligns with the principle of innovation – meaning fostering a culture of creativity, exploration, and forward-thinking in different fields, including business, technology, science, and social development and the recognition that solving global challenges requires innovative approaches, technologies, and business models. By fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, EUTOPIA aims to create an environment that encourages creativity, experimentation, and the development of novel solutions. This objective enables EUTOPIA to drive societal impact through novel and innovative ideas. In order to achieve this, EUTOPIA will:

  • Develop competences that support entrepreneurship and innovation;
  • Develop and manage processes for successful collaboration, valorisation, implementation, and impact;
  • Provide incentives to stimulate output development and foster a culture of innovation.

3. Implement monitoring, evaluation and feedback mechanisms to follow the results and impact of the strategy

The third objective involves the implementation of monitoring, evaluation, and feedback mechanisms to track the results and impact of the strategy. By adopting these mechanisms, EUTOPIA aims to effectively monitor the progress of its initiatives, evaluate their outcomes, and make informed decisions for improvement. This objective underscores the significance of accountability, transparency, and evidence-based decision-making in achieving the desired capacity building and societal impact.

Driving Impact

By actively pursuing these objectives and implementing the recommended activities, EUTOPIA will augment its capacity for excellence and impact through research and innovation collaboration, as well as continuous improvement.

EUTOPIA’s R&I Strategy serves as a dynamic engine for impact. By blending bottom-up initiatives with high-level strategic goals, the alliance strengthens its network of research infrastructures, connects diverse communities, and fosters high-quality outputs that address the EU’s societal needs. Its interdisciplinary and challenge-driven focus ensures that research effectively answers the green and digital transitions, economic resilience, and imperatives of global sustainability.
