Luc Soete is the former Dean of the Brussels School of Governance at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He is also a Honorary Professor of international economics at Maastricht University, The Netherlands and Vice-Chairman of the supervisory board of the Technical University Delft (TUD) and a member of CDHO (“Commissie Doelmatigheid Hoger Onderwijs”), a commission advising the Dutch Ministry for Education. In addition, he is a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Sussex Business School and of the Advisory Board of the UNU Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS) in Bruges, Belgium. He is also a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Previously, Soete served as Rector Magnificus of Maastricht University from 2012 to 2016. Soete also was director of UNU-MERIT, a joint research institute of the United Nations University (UNU) and Maastricht University. He also served as acting vice-director of the Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry (DSTI) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), part-time dean of the Maastricht School of Management (MSM), member of various High Level Expert Groups of the European Commission as well as various expert advisory panels for the Dutch, Belgian and Flemish governments. Luc Soete received the MSM Honorary Fellow Award in 2002, the Belgian Commander of the Order of the Crown in 2006, and an honorary doctorate from Ghent University in 2010. His research interests focus on the economics of innovation and technological change as well as the related policy and measurement issues, both at national and regional/local level as well as at European and international level.
