Driving European Excellence

Europe’s research and innovation landscape is evolving rapidly, and the EUTOPIA Research and Innovation Strategy intends to be part of this transformation.

As part of the European Universities Initiative, EUTOPIA connects ten research-focused universities to build a collaborative knowledge ecosystem throughout Europe, leveraging the unique strengths of each institution while preserving their independence, fostering cross-border innovation, promoting sustainability-focused research, and enhancing Europe’s global competitiveness.

Core Principles

The strategy is rooted in foundational European values and key global imperatives, which translate into actionable priorities:

  1. Academic Freedom & Independence: Upholding the intellectual and ethical independence of research and teaching, in accordance with the principles of the Magna Charta Universitatum.
  2. Bottom-Up Excellence: Empowering researchers to lead innovation, with support from peer-reviewed funding mechanisms and recognition programs aligned with Horizon Europe objectives.
  3. Research–Education Nexus: Seamlessly integrating research with teaching to nurture talent and cultivate future leaders capable of tackling societal challenges.
  4. Sustainable Development & Societal Impact: Aligning research priorities with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal to deliver socially relevant and environmentally sustainable solutions.
  5. Open Science & Research Integrity: Advocating for transparency and responsible research and innovation (RRI), fostering ethical conduct to bolster Europe’s research credibility and trust.
  6. Interdisciplinary & Cross-Border Collaboration: Promoting partnerships across disciplines and national borders, supporting the European Strategy for Universities’ vision of integrated higher education.
  7. Innovation & Knowledge Transfer: Translating research into real economic and societal value through collaboration with industry, policymakers, and civil society.
  8. European Added Value through Alliance Synergy: Enhancing competitiveness in Horizon Europe and other EU research programs, thus achieving impacts that extend beyond the capabilities of any single institution.
