Amid rising geopolitical tensions and global challenges such as climate change, AI governance and pandemics, the EUTOPIA European University Alliance will host the Science Diplomacy Global Conference on 29 May 2026 at the Fondation Universitaire, in Brussels.
The one-day, on-site event will gather academics, policymakers, diplomats and students to examine how universities can strengthen science diplomacy. Discussions will focus on the future of multilateralism, the role of scientists as ambassadors, and practical ways to integrate science diplomacy into university strategies and teaching.
Why This Conference Matters Now
In an era marked by the “triple planetary crisis,” securitisation of research, and strains on international institutions, the conference aims to position European University Alliances as active stewards of the global scientific commons. A dedicated discussion paper will support the dialogue, culminating in the signing of the Brussels Statement on the role of universities in science diplomacy.
The programme features:
- Opening Keynote Speeches
- Panel 1: Multilateralism: What Next? — Balancing cooperation, competition, and security
- Panel 2: The Fourth Dimension — Diplomacy in Science, highlighting scientists’ and university alliances’ contributions
- Panel 3: Models of Implementation — Teaching science diplomacy and innovative practices
- Closing Remarks and networking reception
