Building a European Human Capital Roadmap
The European University Alliance’s Human Resources Strategy is a pillar of EUTOPIA’s vision of a united, challenge-driven European university. HR plays its part in the transformation process, ensuring that academic excellence and research innovation are backed by effective, people-centred governance. Operating across ten different legal frameworks, EUTOPIA’s HR teams work to bridge diverse cultures and systems, coming together to form a cohesive European entity.
At the core of this strategy is a Human Capital Roadmap to attract, develop, and retain academic and professional talent. HR professionals are responsible for managing recruitment, mobility, skills development, and compliance with national regulations, including those related to taxation and labour law. This initiative started with the Horizon 2020 TRAIN project and has since expanded through EUTOPIA MORE and EUTOPIA_HEALTH projects, reflecting a strong commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and innovation among all partner institutions.
The strategy revolves around three main pillars: Leadership, Talent, and Mobility. It aims to enhance the integration of pan-European research communities through harmonised recruitment efforts, modernise career assessment and training systems, and foster a culture of well-being and collaboration—all of which are vital to the sustainability of academic performance. Recruitment can be challenging, but it always presents an opportunity to refine processes that go beyond traditional practices. EUTOPIA addresses this by enhancing branding, establishing a shared jobs board, and promoting active HR networking, making the Alliance an integral part of everyday professional life.
EUTOPIA’s HR Strategy views human capital as a crucial asset for Europe’s destiny, aligning recruitment and mobility with EU policy frameworks. It aspires to set a benchmark for talent development in higher education, emphasising that real European integration starts with people.
