University of Gothenburg

The University of Gothenburg is a multidisciplinary institution founded in 1891. With a long tradition of academic freedom, it has produced internationally recognised and ground-breaking research and achievements. The university fosters a non-hierarchical, open-minded environment where ambition can thrive. Critical thinking is central, and education, research, and innovation are continuously pushed in new directions.

One of Northern Europe’s largest universities

The University of Gothenburg comprises seven faculties, 38 departments, and research centres of expertise that span almost all academic disciplines. More than 50,000 students study at undergraduate and postgraduate level, alongside 2,000 doctoral students and nearly 5,600 full-time staff. Students and staff together represent almost one tenth of the city’s population. Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city, lies on the west coast by the sea. It is a modern, international hub that has retained much of its small-town character. The university’s campuses and facilities are spread across several central areas of the city.
