From Brussels to Ljubljana: A VUB Student’s Experience at the EUTOPIA Ideas Club

This October, Hannah Nägeli, a Bachelor’s student in International Affairs at the VUB’s Brussels School of Governance, joined students from across Europe in Ljubljana for the EUTOPIA Ideas Club, a two-day event exploring “Asylum, Migration, Inclusion and Solidarity in the European Union.”

Held at the University of Ljubljana’s Faculty of Law, the Ideas Club gathered 30 students from EUTOPIA partner universities to debate, negotiate, and reflect on how the EU can balance security and solidarity in its migration and asylum policies. Participants were assigned countries and asked to represent their national positions in a model EU Council simulation, gaining first-hand experience of how diplomacy and compromise shape EU decision-making.

“I represented Bulgaria, which was super interesting,” Hannah said. “I had to argue for things I might not personally agree with, but it made me understand the complexity of the discussions. It showed how much cooperation, empathy, and trust matter in finding real solutions.”

Beyond the formal debates, the event offered a unique opportunity to meet peers from across disciplines and cultures, from politics and law to data science and IT.

“It’s always amazing to be with people from all over Europe,” Hannah added. “Everyone was so motivated and kind. We’ve even kept in touch on LinkedIn and Instagram.”

The experience wasn’t without its lessons. As Hannah reflected, “The organisation could have been clearer. Some people didn’t realise it was an [Model UN]-style simulation, and the first day felt a bit messy.” Yet for her, that didn’t overshadow the value of the event. “Overall it was great. I learned a lot about other countries, met inspiring people, and it made me want to take part in more EUTOPIA activities.”

“I didn’t even know about EUTOPIA before applying,” Hannah admitted. “But now that I do, I’d definitely join again. It’s such a good way to connect with people and learn how Europe actually works.”
