EUTOPIA is taking part — and sharing the newly released EUTOPIA Review n°3 — at the Second European Science Diplomacy Conference, hosted by the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU and the European Commission. The event brings together policymakers, diplomats, researchers, civil society, and industry to reflect on how science diplomacy can strengthen Europe’s competitiveness, foster innovation, and promote international cooperation.
Organised in cooperation with leading Danish scientific institutions and coordinated by the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance (of which EUTOPIA is a member), the conference will be attended by EUTOPIA and FORTHEM alliances in situ.
Morning Side Events: Framing the Debate
Ahead of the formal opening, three open side events explored emerging dimensions of science diplomacy.
Where Are the Publics in Science Diplomacy?
At the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, this session examined how civil society actors can support trust in research, strengthen international cooperation, and help address global challenges such as climate change and misinformation.
From Research to Relation: International Scientific Networks
Hosted at Copenhagen Business School, this event showcased how long-term scientific collaborations act as “quiet diplomacy,” building trust and shaping the foundations for successful science–policy engagement.
Ukraine: From Threat to Empowerment
Also at Copenhagen Business School, this round table reflected on how Ukrainian researchers have responded to war with remarkable resilience and innovation, offering lessons for Europe on crisis-driven scientific diplomacy.
A High-Level European Programme
The conference opening features contributions from Danish institutional leaders, the European Commission, and senior science and foreign-policy officials. Keynotes by Enrico Letta, Hans-Joachim Schellnhuber, and Macharia Kamau set the tone for discussions on Europe's role in a rapidly shifting geopolitical and technological landscape.
Afternoon sessions explore Ocean, Polar, and Space diplomacy, followed by networking events bringing together Europe’s extended science diplomacy community
EUTOPIA’s Contribution
Through its active presence in Copenhagen, EUTOPIA strengthens its role as a connector between universities, policymakers, and international partners. Sharing EUTOPIA Review n°3, the alliance continues to contribute to an informed, collaborative, and forward-looking European science diplomacy ecosystem.
