Ana Rita Gil holds a PhD in Law from the NOVA School of Law / Lisbon and a degree in Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra.
She is currently a Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, having previously held these positions at the Portuguese Catholic University and NOVA School of Law, in the subjects of International Law, Constitutional Law, European Law, Fundamental Rights, Children’s Rights and Immigrant and Refugee Rights. She is a frequent trainer for the European Judicial Training Network.
She has several publications, mainly on Fundamental Rights, Human Rights, Immigration and Refugee Law and Children’s Law. She has collaborated on several consultancy projects for the European Commission, as well as in international academic networks on these matters. She was an advisor to the Office of Judges of the Constitutional Court from 2010 to 2018, and deputy to the Office of the Ombudsman, particularly on matters of international cooperation and human rights.
She has also been a member of several government working groups on human rights, immigration, racism and non-discrimination. Since 2023, she has worked as a consultant for the United Nations on Human Rights and for the International Organization for Migration. She is currently an Advisor to the National Council for Migration and Asylum. She is a Researcher at Lisbon Public Law, coordinating research projects on International Law and Armed Conflict, Human Rights and Immigration.
