Real, lasting transformation – not just activity
At EUTOPIA, we measure what matters: the durable changes our alliance creates for students, staff, universities, society and European policy. Our Impact Strategy is the shared framework that turns ambitious collaboration into evidence-based, sustainable outcomes. It is fully aligned with the European Universities Initiative and guides every Work Group.
What does impact mean for us
Impact is the measurable transformation that outlives individual projects:
- Individual → skills, careers, confidence
- Institutional → new policies, processes, cultures
- Alliance → genuine confederal governance and shared identity
- Societal / European → regional cohesion, science diplomacy, openness, sustainability
Our eight Areas of Impact
- Tier 1 – Core (full measurement & governance steering)
- Students, staff & faculty • Universities (structural change) • Alliance (confederal model)
- Tier 2 – Strategic enablers
- Equity & diversity • Science diplomacy • Open Education, Open Science & Citizen Science
- Tier 3 – Broader contributions
- Economy & society • European & global challenges • EU sustainability agenda
How we measure and prove impact – simply and credibly
- 16 Alliance-level Core KPIs (max 3 per Work Package)
- Quantitative data + qualitative evidence (case studies, contribution analysis)
- Longitudinal tracking from 2022 baseline
- Clear distinction: we show contribution, not sole attribution
This keeps reporting light, comparable and useful for real decisions.
Governance and practical use
Work Packages collect evidence. Governance bodies (Board of Presidents, Management Board) use it to:
- scale what works
- institutionalise successful practices
- redesign or stop what does not deliver
- strengthen EUTOPIA’s voice in European policy
Why this matters in practice
The EUTOPIA Impact strategy ensures our Alliance is not just active, but accountable and sustainable. It helps us:
- embed joint programmes, Open Science practices and green mobility permanently
- influence European policy (European Degree, research assessment, science diplomacy)
- demonstrate to funders, students and society that European University Alliances deliver real value
In short: we create change we can see, prove and sustain – together.
