A Campus at the Heart of the Carnation Revolution
The day that ended 50 years of dictatorship and launched democracy in Portugal also passed through what is now NOVA University Lisbon’s Campolide campus. In the early hours of 25 April 1974, military forces departed from the site to undertake key operations that contributed to the success of the Carnation Revolution.
In April 1974, the headquarters of the 5th Caçadores Battalion was located at Colégio Almada Negreiros, on NOVA University’s Campolide campus. In the early hours of 25 April, at around 3:00 a.m., a military force comprising two Caçadores companies departed from this site: one tasked with occupying the Headquarters of the Lisbon Military Government in São Sebastião da Pedreira, and the other assigned to secure Rádio Clube Português, on Rua Sampaio e Pina.
The successful completion of these missions was reported to the Armed Forces Movement (MFA) Command Post at 3:20 a.m. The MFA’s first communiqué would be broadcast by that radio station at 4:26 a.m.
This was the moment that gave voice to change and marked the beginning of a new chapter in Portugal’s history.
