Fun Fact
From Patents to Pints: Innovation at TUD
Did you know that TUD Dresden University of Technology (TUD) is Germany’s most patent-intensive university? With more than 300 patents filed in the last five years, TUD consistently ranks among the country’s leading universities when it comes to transferring research into practical applications. Some of these ideas become high-tech innovations, others take more unusual forms: one well-known example is “Lohrmanns”- the TUD beer from Germany’s first university spin-off brewery. Founded in 2019 as a start-up by two TUD professors and researchers, the brewery was named after Wilhelm Gotthelf Lohrmann, the university’s founder.
In 2026, TUD successfully defended its status as a University of Excellence in Germany’s Excellence Strategy, reaffirming its position among the country’s leading research universities and strengthening its international visibility in research and innovation. This development is also reflected in TUD’s new claim: collaborative, inventive, transformative, and engaged. These four terms summarise the university’s focus on interdisciplinary cooperation, research-driven innovation, international partnerships, and its ambition to actively contribute to technological and societal progress.
